Woman survives weeklong coma after eating light soup

When Lindsey Pritchard was rushed to the hospital last week, doctors were concerned that the 31-year-old woman had a rare brain infection. But after a week in a coma, Pritchard woke up--and attributed her survival to eating nothing but a light soup for the past seven days.

According to Pritchard, she'd been feeling sick for a few days before going into the coma. "I had a fever and I was just exhausted," she told reporters. "My husband said I should go to the hospital, and by the time I got there I couldn't speak."

At the hospital, Pritchard was diagnosed with viral meningitis and put into a medically-induced coma. When she woke up a week later, her husband told her that she'd only eaten a cup of broth since being admitted. "I couldn't believe it," she said. "I was surprised that something so simple could make such a big difference."

Doctors say that while Pritchard's story is unusual, it's not unheard of for people to recover from serious illnesses after eating very lightly. "Our bodies are really amazing," said one doctor involved in Pritchard's care. "They can sometimes heal themselves if we give them the chance."
